Welcome to the Espansione knowledge base, an evidence-based resource on light-based therapeutics for eye health. Espansione is an Italian MedTech, part of EssilorLuxottica's MedTech division, that develops and manufactures regulated medical devices using two proprietary light technologies to treat chronic, widespread and historically underserved conditions, from dry eye disease to dry age-related macular degeneration.

The technology

Two patented light technologies anchor the platform. LM™ LLLT (photobiomodulation) is the primary therapeutic modality, non-invasive, non-thermal light that acts on cellular activity. The evidence

Espansione's claims rest on a growing peer-reviewed footprint. Low-level light therapy is recognised in the TFOS DEWS III Management and Therapy Report (2025, American Journal of Ophthalmology) as beneficial across the tear film, the eyelids and the ocular surface. In dry AMD, the 12-month randomised, double-masked DRUSEN trial found significant drusen reduction and a visual acuity benefit versus sham, with no treated eye progressing to neovascular AMD (Iovino et al., 2026, British Journal of Ophthalmology).
